As Knox County continues to evolve, KCF, RFA and Knox Pages remain committed to preserving the role of local journalism in the community. Together, they are empowering residents with the knowledge and awareness needed to engage in shaping the future of Knox County . Newspapers and the people who run them have stifled the development of digital journalism . Slavery to print – as well as simple laziness and stump stupidity – have sucked the energy out of efforts to creatively use this new medium. By improving media literacy, supporting independent journalism , and holding the media accountable, Knox County residents can work towards a future where their local news provides accurate, fair, and unbiased information vital for a thriving and informed community. That is to say, you choose what media you support by what you read, watch and listen to, and so you have tremendous influence over the quality of news . I’m naturally optimistic in the future of my field, in this community and in the future . Reporters like Daniel Dassow are a big reason why. At the 145th convention of the Texas Press Association, June 19– 21, in Denton, The Caprock Courier, The Floyd County Hesperian-Beacon, The Knox County News -Courier, The Post Dispatch and The Texas Spur were among 108 Texas daily, semi-weekly, and weekly newspapers receiving annual awards for outstanding journalism in 17 categories in ten. Knox News journalists were honored with 39 citations for their work in 2024 by the Society of Professional Journalists . Honored work ran the gamut from investigative reporting to breaking news. Griscom and Mr. Seigenthaler talked about the past, present, and future of journalism and newspapers . Both seem to agree that print’s days may be numbered and that the future of newspapers is online. But as local newspapers shrink and broader-based national sites grow, who’s going to cover the local news? It’s something that, as a journalist, it’s hard not to fret about. There are several interesting points, but one is Carroll’s observation of local movements to buy daily newspapers back from corporate owners and return the papers ’ focus to journalism and community service.
